"Lij guided us on a four day trek through the Simien Mountains. He was an excellent guide. He has a calm manner and excellent knowledge of the park.

We booked through a tour operator in Gonder who did not provide us with adequate sleeping bags. Lij helped us find a blanket from a local village and even gave us his sleeping bag on the final night.

It was great being led through the park by someone who was born in this amazing place. It is good to be able to book with the guide directly, rather than go through a tour operator."

"I did a three day trek with Lij as guide in the Simien Mountains, and it was a highlight of my two week trip to Ethiopia. The mountains are absolutely spectacular. The only other thing I’ve seen that I can compare them to is the Grand Canyon. Lij was a friendly, attentive and knowledgeable guide. He couldn’t do enough to look after us, always making sure we had enough to eat and were comfortable. The food was great and plentiful.

Lij’s knowledge of the area and of its wildlife was superb. Lij sought out some Walia ibex, an antelope indigenous to the region, so we got the chance to see them. He answered all our questions
insightfully. Clearly Lij has a passion for the local area, and all it has to offer, as well as for Ethiopia as a whole.

Lij was excellent at pacing the walking so we managed the challenging routes, and was very conscious of the effect of altitude on us. He pushed us just enough and allowed plenty of time for rest. The pace of the walk was guided by what we could manage and I felt safe at all times.

Lij had a very high standard of English and even so was keen to keep improving.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Lij as a guide to anyone wanting to explore the beauty of Ethiopia’s wilderness."

"We went to Ethiopia to visit our daughter and she suggested a trip to the Simien Mountains. She mentioned the excellent guide she and a friend had employed there. How lucky we were that Lij was available for us as well.

He took on a very reliable driver in Gonder and a scout joined us in Debark. Lij made sure we had sufficient stops on the journey and he pointed out interesting landmarks without bombarding us with too much information.

During our few days in the Simiens he was always punctual as were his driver and scout. Knowing we were somewhat older and less daring than our daughter and her friend, he tailored the walks to suit us, always aware of safety and our reactions to heat and altitude!

One afternoon as we descended a stony slope towards a few huts he announced he had arranged for us to have tea! A very ancient Ibex, known to Lij, was grazing nearby.

His love of his native mountains, his extensive knowledge of their plants, animals and people, were quite infectious.

Lij is an entirely committed and reliable guide. We have no hesitation in recommending him as a tour leader in the stunning Roof of Africa."

"Having just finished a fabulous 4-day trek with my mother in the Simien Mountains, it is without hesitation that I would thoroughly recommend Lijalem as a Simiens guide. He was reliable, considerate, good company and very well organised - hand picking a great team of chefs, mule handlers and our scout.

In addition he was a wealth of knowledge on the phenomenal environment and brilliant flora and fauna that we were fortunate to chance upon. Lijalem provided a fantastically rich Simiens experience and I wish him all the best in the future."
